Description: Leon Mougenot violins are usually made after Stradivari and less frequently, Guarneri models. They are usually coated with a rich red-brown or golden-brown varnish and Mougenots' production is generally known for its fine workmanship and tonal qualities. This violin is a finished in a warm golden brown varnish and in very good condition. It has a 2 piece back, ebony chin rest, pegs and tail piece and is supplied with a lightweight oblong violin case.

Background: Leon Mougenot was born 1874. A pupil of Georges Mougenot, he worked for Blanchard at Lyons, Jombar at Paris, and Hill and Sons in London. Established at Mirecourt, 1899, where he had scores of pupils. Made exact imitations of Stradivarius, Guarnerius, Vuillaume and Lupot instruments. Known for his superfine workmanship which was guaranteed to be done by hand. Models usually not varnished to have the appearance of age but remarkable for a transparent varnish of warm aspect and various shades.

Leon Mougenot violins are described by Henley as being veritable art productions and producing a sonorously clear tone.
